HD Radio Multicasting Restrictions End, Enhancing Portable Radios

In the three years since the HD Radio Alliance was started, the number of HD2 mulitcast broadcasts has grown to more than 850 and the alliance member broadcasters have adopted an innovative, unique approach to revenue-generation. Instead of the commercial radio spot approach that is favored by FM and AM broadcasts, HD2 multicast channels use other forms of advertising, including day-part "takeovers" and sponsorships. The result: more talk shows and music and fewer commercial interruptions.

With the controls now being taken more directly by broadcasters, the HD Digital Radio Alliance now be able to devote even more resources on marketing HD Radio broadcasts and HD Portable Radios to American consumers, with particular focus being on the local HD2 programming.

All restrictions on how the HD Radio alliance member broadcasters can generate revenue and program their HD2 broadcasts have been completely lifted. The Alliance also announced that all member radio broadcasters have pledged to continue the local diversity as well as consumer choice of their HD2 radio content, as well as the clutter-free nature of the programming. These steps should help lead to further portable radio sales.
