News release. Clear Channel now offers HD radio tagging for iTunes

Clear Channel Radio Inc., which is the largest radio broadcaster in the United States, tagging tracks that play on its HD radio stations. It will help listeners purchase music for their radios, including portable HD Radios, through iTunes. The company is leveraging HD radio technology to provide the new service.

Clear Channel Inc. has said that it has implemented HD tagging on more than 300 of its stations. An iPod that is attached records the information on the songs you’ve tagged. And the next time you synchronize that iPod, the songs you selected are displayed on a list that you can then purchase using the iTunes Store.

The technology works over both HD FM radio and HD2 multicast radio channels. HD Radio’s creator states that the technology offers CD quality audio over FM frequencies. iBiquity also indicated in January that Clear Channel and its competitor CBS Radio Inc. are implementing tagging in their broadcasts. Portable HD Radio receivers include products made by Alpine, JBL, JVC, Sony, Polk Audio and many others.
