Portable HD Radio Chip Released
Beginning next month, HD Radio manufacturers will be able to acquire a new smaller, lower power, form factor chip solution that will transmit HD Radio in many types of new products including HD portable radio products.
To date, no supplier other than Coby has developed a portable HD Radio product, although iBiquity, the developer of HD Radio, has shown rough prototypes at International CES in January of a cellular and MP3 phone with HD Radio capability.
SiPort, based in California, is offering the new SP1010 single chip HD Radio receiver that will also work in car radios, table top radios, as well as home theater systems.
A spokesperson for iBiquity said that LG is currently sampling the new SP1010 chip solution and that LG expects it to be in full production for a yet to be named product in the fourth quarter. It was not revealed if the LG product would be a HD portable radio.
